Subhash Agarwal Nominated Member, Steel Consumer Council , Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India.

When all held good for time comes unstuck, burn your bridges. Nothing can be too daring when all seems lost. So it was with Subhash Agarwal, whose father’s business in the mining industry was, for all purposes, staring at a dead end when the government nationalized the family’s coalmines in Bihar over two decades ago. So, after he graduated form Ranchi University in 1980, Subhash came to Bangalore to try his hand at any business he thought viable and could afford to start out with, give the paucity of capital resources he had at his disposal.

Recalling the time, he says he managed to gather around Rs. 1 lakh which went into setting up a facility, which would serve as base for trading in steel and iron, which was tentatively chosen as a marketing option. Today, Kaushalesh Steels International posts an annual turnover of around Rs. 100 crores, with around eight per cent of the market in south India and clientele operating out of India, Sri Lanka and the US.

“We received enormous financial support from Canara Bank,” Mr. Agarwal says. “The bank lent us around 2 lakh in 1982 with absolutely no collateral.”

Over the years, Canara Bank has financed Kaushalesh to the tune of over Rs. 1 crore, while the company’s turnover grew at a steady 20 per cent from Rs. 10 lakh in 1980–81. This is higher than the 13 to 15 per cent the industry has been growing at over the past decade.

The iron and steel trade has low profit margins, says Mr. Agarwal, so the company has to count on large volumes and as many contracts as it can handle. And, in the business, nothing holds one in better stead than a solid reputation. “We have been concentrating on building an image of a firm that will deliver what it promises, and that has helped us grow.”

He had attended A I C C convention at TAl  Katora Stadium in 1980, at the young age 21. Worked for the success of Indian Youth Congress (I)  convention which  was inaugurated by Sri  Rajiv Gandhi at Bangalore Palace during 1982, and also attended 82nd INC Plenary Session at Hyderabad.
